Having been synonymous with high-flying drones over the better part of a decade, DJI came back to earth late last year, introducing the portable one-handed Osmo Pocket camera. Now, the Shenzhen-headquartered company is introducing a new product line that further diversifies its camera lineup.
The Osmo Action is, as the name suggests, a rugged action camera that is very similar to GoPro’s Hero line. It is essentially a tiny, lightweight (4.4 oz) but rugged digital camera capable of being submerged in water or dropped from a height of up to five feet, according to DJI, making it ideal for people who like to document their cycling, skateboarding, surfing, or outdoor activities.
There are a couple of stand-out features that separate DJI’s product from the competition The first is that the Osmo Action has two screens: one on the backside, like any other digital camera in existence, but also a secondary front-facing 1.4-inch screen for selfies.
The Osmo Action also boasts excellent EIS (electronic image stabilization), which DJI has dubbed “Rock Steady mode.” Turning it on will result in a slight cropping of the frame, but make a night and day difference in footage when trying to compensate for camera shake.
